The critical identifier is the Schluter profile label on the interior jamb, usually a stamped aluminum tag reading “KERDI-BOARD-SW” or similar, plus the membrane lot number printed on the fleece backing.

To match parts correctly, we need three things: the profile series (KERDI-BOARD, DITRA-HEAT, or the older DITRA-XL), the rough opening dimension to the nearest eighth-inch, and whether the original install used Schluter’s pre-formed corners or site-cut membrane strips. Pre-formed corners from 2015-2019 are a known compatibility gotcha in Mountain View. They were shipped in two generations with different fleece densities, and the older version delaminates faster in our dry summer heat. If your home was built or remodeled in that window, check whether the corner pieces feel papery or fabric-backed. • Draft detectable around the frame perimeter, even with the sash locked. The Schluter profile gasket has compressed past recovery or the DITRA-HEAT expansion gap was set too tight during original install. Thermal cycling in our 40-degree winter-to-summer swing hardens EPDM faster than the manufacturer rates for.
• Visible gap between the window frame and the finished wall surface. The KERDI-BOARD substrate has absorbed moisture and swollen, pushing the trim plane out of flush. This is more common in south-facing elevations where afternoon sun drives condensation cycles.
• Membrane bubbling or tenting on the exterior sill. Trapped water under the membrane has broken the thin-set bond. On flat sills without adequate slope, Mountain View’s occasional hard rain pools and finds any void.
• Hardware binding or sash dropping. Not strictly a Schluter issue, but the integrated profile system shifts if the waterproofing layer below has failed. The window frame torques slightly, and the sash geometry goes out of square.

What you shouldn’t attempt: cutting or removing the Schluter membrane. The KERDI fleece is bonded with a modified thin-set that releases with heat, but the heat gun settings that work without scorching the substrate take practice to judge. More importantly, the sill pan flashing is a continuous waterproofing layer. A break in continuity voids the system’s warranty and, in our experience, leaks within two rainy seasons. The membrane also supports structural load at the sill; improper re-bed and the window frame settles unevenly.
