Mighty Buildings Driveway & Pavers: The Mountain View Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Mighty Buildings-compatible driveway and paver systems in Mountain View, with typical installed replacement costs running $5,000-$14,000 for driveway replacement and $7,000-$18,000 for paver installations depending on substrate condition and square footage. Most Mighty Buildings homeowners in Mountain View first notice trouble when the permeable paver joints start shedding filler material after winter rains, or when the stamped concrete surface begins spalling where the original pour met the modular foundation edge.

The Mighty Buildings system uses a proprietary interface between the factory-built module and site-built hardscape. In Mountain View, we’ve seen that interface fail prematurely when the original installer didn’t account for the clay-heavy soils near the Stevens Creek corridor, which expand and contract more than the module’s engineered tolerances allow. The gap opens, water gets in, and the paver bed destabilizes from below. We’ve replaced enough of these to keep the common failure patterns in stock.

Which Mighty Buildings Models This Applies To

Mighty Buildings has shipped three distinct product generations into California, and the driveway interface detail changed with each. The Series 1 units (2019-2021) used a standard concrete apron with a 4-inch reveal; Series 2 (2021-2023) switched to an integrated paver tray with 2-inch clearance; the current Series 3 uses a floating paver system with a proprietary edge restraint that Mighty Buildings calls the “SmartLock” profile. You can identify your series by the module data plate, usually mounted on the electrical chase near the main panel. The plate lists the model prefix: MB1-, MB2-, or MB3-.

The OEM paver edge restraint for Series 3 is a powder-coated aluminum extrusion that Mighty Buildings sources from a single supplier in Ontario, California. Lead time is typically 3-4 weeks. We stock a compatible aftermarket extrusion from Techo-Bloc that matches the SmartLock profile within 1/32 inch, which is close enough for the paver lock to function as designed. For Series 1 and 2, the interface is less proprietary, and standard Belgard or Techo-Bloc edge restraints work without modification. We keep both brands on the truck for Mountain View calls.

One compatibility gotcha: Series 2 units with the optional heated driveway package used a thicker insulation board beneath the paver bed. If you’re replacing pavers on one of these, the new bed must match that thickness exactly or the heating cable will sit too shallow and risk damage during compaction. We measure before we quote.

Signs Your Mighty Buildings Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Mighty Buildings Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Paver joints shedding polymeric sand within six months of refilling. This means water is migrating upward through the base rather than draining through it, usually because the permeable bedding layer has clogged with fine sediment from the native soil. In Mountain View, this happens most often on lots where the original grading directed runoff toward the module rather than away from it.
  • Stamped concrete spalling along the module edge. The factory module and site pour move at different rates. When the control joint wasn’t cut deep enough or was placed too far from the module wall, the stress concentrates and the surface flakes off in plates. We’ve seen this on three downtown Mountain View installs where the original contractor used a standard 1-inch joint depth instead of the 1.5-inch minimum the site drawings specified.
  • Pavers rocking or sounding hollow when stepped on. The bedding sand has washed out or the base course has settled, often where the Mighty Buildings downspout discharges directly onto the hardscape without a splash block or underground drain. The fix isn’t just releveling the pavers; you need to address the water source or it repeats in two seasons.
  • Efflorescence blooming across the paver surface in white patches. This is calcium hydroxide migrating to the surface, and while it’s cosmetic, heavy efflorescence on a Mighty Buildings install often signals that the vapor barrier beneath the slab was compromised during module placement. The moisture path needs to be traced before cosmetic treatment.
  • Edge restraint pulling away from the paver field, creating a gap. On Series 3 SmartLock systems, this usually means the aluminum extrusion has cracked at a fastening point. The extrusion is thin-walled by design, and the expansion-contraction cycle in Mountain View’s 40-degree annual temperature swing fatigues it over 3-4 years.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Mountain View Price Range What’s Included
Driveway replacement (concrete) $5,000-$14,000 Removal, substrate prep, pour, finish, cure protection
Paver driveway installation $7,000-$18,000 Excavation, base course, bedding, pavers, edge restraint, joint fill
Paver patio installation $3,500-$11,000 Same as above, scaled for typical 12×16 footprint
Driveway sealing $250-$700 Clean, repair minor spalls, two-coat sealer application
Substrate repair (localized) $400-$1,800 Excavate, recompact base, relay pavers, match joint sand

The wide range on driveway replacement reflects substrate condition more than anything. If we pull the old concrete and find the Mighty Buildings module’s perimeter drainage mat has collapsed, that’s additional excavation and a different backfill spec. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, we write the price before anyone picks up a tool, and if we find something unexpected, the change order gets signed before the work proceeds. Our projects finish within a few percent of the agreed number because we don’t start until the number is agreed.

The paver installation price includes a documented photo record of the base course before we lay a single paver. You get that record as standard, not as an upgrade. Warranty on paver workmanship is one year; the 365-Day Done Right Promise covers anything that wasn’t done right to begin with. Techo-Bloc and Belgard both carry their own material warranties, which we register on your behalf.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no high-tension danger in driveway work the way there is with garage door springs, but there is a point where DIY becomes expensive self-education. A homeowner can safely check whether the downspout is dumping water onto the paver bed, whether joint sand is actually missing or just discolored, and whether the module data plate shows which series they’re dealing with. A phone photo of that plate sent to us saves twenty minutes on the site visit.

Where DIY goes wrong on Mighty Buildings installs is the interface detail. The module warranty can be voided if site work damages the weather barrier or the perimeter flashing. We’ve been called in after a homeowner’s paver reset cracked the Series 3 SmartLock extrusion by driving stakes too deep. The extrusion is $38 per linear foot plus the 3-week OEM lead time, and the module manufacturer documented the damage as installer error. Measure twice, write it down, then build it that way. If you’re unsure where the module ends and your property begins, call (669) 215-4852 and we’ll mark it with you.
