Belgard Driveway & Pavers: The Mountain View Owner’s Guide

Belgard pavers and driveway systems in Mountain View typically run $7,000-$18,000 installed for a full paver driveway, with repair and replacement work quoted in writing before we start. We stock Belgard-compatible edge restraints, bedding sand, joint stabilizers, and paver units for the Cambridge, Dublin, and Lafitt series most common in Santa Clara County. Most Mountain View homeowners notice the problem first as shifting pavers after winter rains or UV-brittled edge restraints along the garage apron where the delivery truck cuts it too close.

Which Belgard Models This Applies To

Belgard organizes its hardscape line into series families, and the part you need depends on which family is installed. The Cambridge series, with its beveled edge and roughly 2-3/8 inch thickness, was specified heavily in Mountain View builds from 2012 to 2019. The Dublin series runs thinner at 2-1/4 inches with a cobbled surface, and the Lafitt series uses a larger format at 2-3/8 inches with a slate texture. Check the paver itself: Belgard stamps the series name on the spacer bars underneath, visible if you lift a loose unit from the edge.

Edge restraints are where most failures happen, and they’re not universal. The PVC snap-edge restraint used for Cambridge won’t seat properly against the thicker Lafitt profile. We carry both the OEM Belgard restraint profile and the Perma-Edge aluminum equivalent, which we prefer on Mountain View jobs with clay-heavy soil near the Stevens Creek corridor because it flexes less during our wet winters. For joint sand, we stock Polymeric “Techniseal” in tan and gray, the two colors that match 90 percent of the Belgard installations we’ve serviced between Castro Street and the San Antonio neighborhood.

Signs Your Belgard Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Belgard Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Pavers rocking under foot or tire. The bedding sand layer has washed out or compacted unevenly, usually where downspouts discharge or irrigation overshoots the planting bed. In Mountain View, we see this most on north-facing driveways where moss holds moisture against the joint sand.
  • Visible gaps widening between units. Joint sand loss lets pavers migrate independently; the gap starts at 1/8 inch and grows until the interlock is gone. Once interlock fails, the load transfers to individual pavers instead of the whole field, and cracking follows.
  • Edge restraints pulling away from the border. The plastic or aluminum strip that locks the outer course in place has popped nails or rotted stakes. This is almost always the first structural failure we find on Belgard driveways older than eight years in Mountain View’s clay soils.
  • Surface spalling or color fading in patches. Belgard’s color-through concrete holds up well, but de-icing salts (rare here) or fertilizer spills from adjacent lawn service will etch the surface. More commonly, we see this where pool equipment backwash crosses a paver path.
  • Low spots holding water after rain. The base course has settled, usually from inadequate compaction during original install or from utility trench backfill that wasn’t compacted in lifts. Mountain View’s old orchard soils near the downtown grid are particularly prone to this if the geotextile was skipped.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Price Range in Mountain View
Paver driveway installation (new) $7,000 - $18,000
Driveway replacement (remove and replace) $5,000 - $14,000
Edge restraint repair (perimeter only) $800 - $2,200
Bedding sand and relevel (no new pavers) $1,200 - $3,500
Joint sand restabilization (polymeric) $400 - $1,100
Driveway sealing (protective coat) $250 - $700

The range depends on three things: how many pavers need replacing (we stock common Belgard colors; special orders add two weeks), whether the base course is salvageable, and how much of the edge restraint has failed. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, you get the full number in writing before we lift the first paver. That price includes the documented photo record, the written scope, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise. No change order gets signed unless you sign it first.

There’s no high-tension danger here, but there is a knowledge trap. A homeowner can safely pull a loose paver, check the bedding sand depth (should be 1 inch of coarse concrete sand), and verify whether the edge restraint is still pinned. What goes wrong is the base: if the 4-6 inch aggregate base has settled, adding sand on top just creates a thicker flexible layer that fails again in one season. We’ve releveled three Mountain View driveways in the last two years where the owner did exactly this, and each time the fix cost more than doing it once.

Polymeric sand application looks simple but demands a completely dry surface and 24 hours of cure without rain. Mountain View’s marine layer makes that window narrower than most owners realize. If the sand activates before it’s swept in clean, you get a haze that doesn’t wash off.
