Barrette Driveway & Pavers: The Mountain View Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Barrette-compatible driveway and paver systems in Mountain View, with paver driveway installation typically running $7,000-$18,000 and concrete driveway installation at $4,500-$12,000 depending on substrate condition and access. Most Barrette paver resets and section replacements can be scheduled within a few business days, and we carry common Barrette edge restraints, leveling sand, and polymeric jointing compounds on our trucks. Homeowners usually notice the problem first as shifting or sinking pavers near the garage apron or along the street edge, where the freeze-thaw cycle and Mountain View’s clay-heavy soil beneath the Old Mountain View and Monta Loma neighborhoods work the base layer loose.

Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette’s residential paver line includes the PermaPave, StoneCrest, and Classic Cobble series, each with distinct edge-restraint profiles and joint widths. The PermaPave uses a 3/16-inch spacer lug integrated into the paver body; StoneCrest relies on separate plastic edge restraints pinned every 18 inches; Classic Cobble is hand-spaced with 1/4-inch joints that require specific gradations of joint sand. Check the underside of a lifted paver for the stamped model code, or measure the joint width and paver thickness (typically 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inches for Barrette residential product).

OEM Barrette edge restraints and jointing compounds are available through regional distributors in San Jose, but we’ve found that Unilock and Belgard aftermarket edge systems match the Barrette profile within tolerance and often ship faster. The catch is the spacer lug: PermaPave replacements must seat flush against the neighboring paver, so a non-lugged substitute leaves a gap that collects debris and accelerates settling. We stock both OEM and compatible options and match on-site before ordering bulk material.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Pavers rock underfoot or sound hollow when tapped. The bedding sand has washed out or compacted unevenly, usually from inadequate edge restraint or a failed geotextile fabric that let native soil migrate upward. In Mountain View, this shows up first on north-facing driveways where moisture lingers.
  • Visible settling along the garage apron or sidewalk edge. The aggregate base was likely insufficient (4 inches minimum for residential vehicle loads, 6 inches for heavier use) or was installed without proper plate compaction in lifts. We’ve pulled up sections in the Rex Manor area where the base was barely 2 inches of loose crush-and-run.
  • Weeds or grass growing through joints. The polymeric sand seal has degraded, or regular masonry sand was used instead of jointing compound. Mountain View’s winter rains wash standard sand out within two seasons.
  • Chipped or spalled paver surfaces. Barrette’s concrete pavers are rated for freeze-thaw, but de-icing salt accelerates surface degradation. This is cosmetic until the aggregate core is exposed, at which point moisture penetration accelerates.
  • Edge restraints pulling away from the perimeter. The 10-inch landscape spikes have corroded or worked loose in expansive clay soil. Once the edge goes, the field pavers migrate outward and the whole installation unravels from the border inward.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Sectional Barrette paver repair in Mountain View runs $800-$2,400 depending on how many square feet need lifting, how much base must be recompacted, and whether matching pavers are still available. A full edge-restraint replacement along a two-car driveway adds $1,200-$2,800. We itemize every line: paver removal and salvage, base excavation and recompaction in 4-inch lifts with a plate compactor, bedding sand replacement, paver relay with new jointing compound, and edge restraint with galvanized spikes.

Under Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, you get the written price before anyone lifts a paver. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers settling, joint failure, or edge drift at no charge if our base prep or materials are at fault. We also document the subsurface condition with photos before and after, so you have a record of what was actually under there.

You can safely check a few things yourself. Lift one paver at the failure edge and measure the base depth with a screwdriver; if it’s under 4 inches of compacted aggregate, that’s your problem. Check whether the edge restraint spikes are present or rusted through. Look for the Barrette model stamp on the paver underside and photograph it.

Where DIY goes wrong is the compaction. A hand tamper won’t achieve 95% Proctor density, and without that, the repair settles again in six months. Renting a plate compactor helps, but the 200-pound units available at most Mountain View rental yards are marginal for clay soil base prep. We use a 500-pound reversible plate and test density with a nuclear gauge on jobs over 150 square feet. If the failure extends more than a few pavers from the edge, or if you need to match discontinued Barrette colors, call us at (669) 215-4852. We’ll measure twice, write it down, then build it that way.
