ViewLux Driveway & Pavers: The Mountain View Owner’s Guide

We stock and install ViewLux-compatible driveway and paver systems in Mountain View, with most replacement projects running $7,000-$18,000 for paver driveways and $3,500-$11,000 for paver patios depending on substrate condition and square footage. Most ViewLux paver replacements we quote include same-day material availability from our Bay Area suppliers. Homeowners usually discover a failure when settling cracks appear along the driveway centerline, when individual pavers rock underfoot after rain, or when the original polymeric sand has washed out from between joints - leaving weeds and a surface that no longer drains properly toward the street.

Which ViewLux Models This Applies To

ViewLux has sold paver systems in the Bay Area through two main distribution channels: the ViewLux Permeable Series (2012-2019) and the ViewLux Pro-Lock line introduced in 2020. The Permeable Series used 60mm-thick concrete pavers with a specific spacer lug geometry - 6mm wide, set 45mm on center - that is not interchangeable with standard Belgard or Techo-Bloc equivalents without resetting the entire bedding course. The Pro-Lock line switched to an interlocking chamfer edge and a nominal 80mm thickness.

To identify your series, check the underside of a lifted paver for the molded “VL” stamp and a two-digit year code. The Permeable Series will show “VL12” through “VL19”; Pro-Lock shows “VL20” or later. If the stamp is worn away, measure the pafer thickness at the edge - 60mm versus 80mm is definitive. We carry both OEM ViewLux replacement pavers and compatible after-market units from our vetted supplier list. For the Permeable Series, we typically recommend OEM matching because the spacer lug geometry affects joint width and permeability calculations; for Pro-Lock, the after-market equivalents from our paver partners perform identically at roughly 15% lower material cost, and we note this distinction in our written quote so you can choose.

Signs Your ViewLux Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your ViewLux Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Individual pavers rock or sink when stepped on. This usually means the bedding sand beneath has washed out or compacted unevenly, often because the original edge restraint failed and allowed lateral spread. In Mountain View, the clay-heavy soils near the San Francisco Bay side accelerate this by expanding and contracting with seasonal moisture changes.
  • Weeds growing consistently from joints despite re-sanding. The polymeric sand binding layer has degraded past recovery, which happens faster in California’s UV exposure than the manufacturer specs suggest. Once the binder breaks down, standard kiln-dried sand refills won’t restore the interlock.
  • Standing water more than 30 minutes after rain. The permeable base layer is clogged with fine sediment, or the original installation pitch has reversed due to subgrade settlement. This is common in older Mountain View neighborhoods where the original compacted base was only 4 inches versus the 6-inch minimum we specify now.
  • Cracks radiating from driveway edges toward the center. The concrete ribbon or paver border is acting as a rigid frame while the interior field shifts; the two materials are fighting each other because the expansion joint detail was omitted or has filled with debris.
  • Pavers spalling or flaking at the surface. This is freeze-thaw damage in a climate that doesn’t freeze hard - which means de-icing salt or fertilizer runoff is the actual cause, and replacement pavers will fail the same way unless the source is identified and the new installation uses a denser concrete mix.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For ViewLux paver driveway replacement in Mountain View, our installed price ranges from $7,000 to $18,000 depending on three factors: square footage, whether the existing base can be salvaged or must be excavated to native soil, and whether the project requires a new permit from the City of Mountain View Building Division. Paver patio replacement runs $3,500 to $11,000 with similar variables.

Component Price Range
Paver removal and disposal $800-$2,200
Base excavation and new aggregate (if needed) $1,500-$4,500
Bedding sand and compaction $600-$1,800
Paver material (OEM or compatible) $2,200-$6,500
Edge restraint and polymeric sand $400-$1,200
Final compaction and sealant application $500-$1,800

Every quote we write breaks out parts and labor separately. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, that written price is fixed - no change order is generated without your signature, and we’ve kept projects within a few percent of the agreed number across 4,000-plus jobs since 2007. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation; paver material warranties run 25 years from the manufacturer and transfer to you with the documentation.

There’s a short list of things a ViewLux owner can safely check without special equipment. Lift one paver at the edge and measure the bedding sand depth - it should be 1 inch of coarse, sharp-edged sand, not masonry sand or dirt. Check whether the edge restraint is still mechanically secured or has pulled away from the paver field. Note any organic staining that might indicate a drainage problem upstream.

Where DIY goes wrong is in the compaction sequence. A paver driveway requires plate compaction of the aggregate base in 6-inch lifts, followed by bedding sand screeded to a uniform 1 inch, followed by final compaction after paver placement with a protective mat. Renting the wrong compactor, skipping the lift sequence, or over-compacting the bedding layer produces the exact failure pattern you’re trying to fix. We’ve reset three Mountain View homeowner DIY paver jobs in the past two years, and each one cost more than our original quote would have because the base had to be fully excavated after improper compaction.
