Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling: The Mountain View Owner’s Guide

Therma-Tru entry systems and interior passage doors are specified into Mountain View kitchen remodels where the kitchen opens directly to a patio, garage, or side yard - common in the Eichler-influenced ranch homes and newer townhomes near downtown. A full kitchen remodel with Therma-Tru door replacement or relocation runs $14,000-$45,000 installed in Mountain View, depending on whether we’re moving a rough opening, replacing a load-bearing header, or simply swapping a slab in an existing frame. We stock Therma-Tru Classic-Craft and Smooth-Star jambs and sills on our Mountain View trucks, and most slab-and-hinge replacements can be templated and ordered within a single site visit.

Most Mountain View homeowners discover their Therma-Tru door is part of the problem mid-remodel, when the old kitchen comes out and the daylight reveals what the cabinets hid: a sill pan tilted toward the house, a jamb leg rotted at the brickmold, or a slab that never sealed properly against the Santa Clara Valley wind. We’ve seen it on Whisman Road, on the streets off Castro, and in the older condos near El Camino. The door worked fine until the kitchen didn’t hide it anymore.

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru categorizes their residential doors by slab construction, not by kitchen application, so the right replacement depends on what was originally installed and what the new kitchen layout demands. The three lines we see in Mountain View kitchens are:

  • Classic-Craft - fiberglass slab with hardwood edge, typically 1-3/4″ thick, often paired with decorative glass in side-lites. The jamb is 4-9/16″ standard; older Mountain View installs sometimes used 6-9/16″ for stucco returns. Check the hinge mortise depth if you’re matching an existing frame.
  • Smooth-Star - painted fiberglass, same thickness, lower maintenance, common on garage-to-kitchen and patio transitions. The S210 or S231 series slabs are pre-hung on finger-jointed jambs; the OEM sill is a composite with a subsill dam, not aluminum.
  • Fiber-Classic - the original fiberglass line, still in production but with updated profiles. Pre-2015 installations in Mountain View may have the FC12 or FC20 slab; the current equivalent is close but not identical in face dimension, so a direct slab swap into an existing jamb can leave a reveal gap.

To identify your model, open the door and check the top edge of the slab for a stamped date code and series abbreviation. The jamb label, usually on the hinge side, lists the rough opening size, jamb width, and whether the unit was ordered with a sill pan. For kitchen remodels where we’re widening the opening to accommodate an island view or sliding hardware, we always verify the header load before specifying a new Therma-Tru unit - a 6’8″ slab in a 3’0″ opening doesn’t matter until you’re cutting the king studs.

Aftermarket equivalents exist for hinges, sills, and weatherstrip, but we source Therma-Tru OEM jambs and sills for kitchen installs because the composite sill profile and integrated pan flashing are proprietary. Hinges and sweep seals are standard enough that a quality aftermarket part works; the jamb itself is not. We carry Classic-Craft and Smooth-Star pre-hung units in 2/8 and 3/0 widths on our Mountain View inventory because those are the sizes that fail most often in kitchen-to-patio applications.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

Signs Your Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
  • Water staining on the interior jamb or drywall return - The sill pan is draining backward or the subsill dam has cracked. In Mountain View, the dry summers hide this; the first winter storm after cabinet removal shows the real damage. We see this most on west-facing kitchen doors where wind-driven rain hits the sweep directly.
  • Door sticks seasonally or won’t latch without shoulder pressure - The jamb legs have absorbed moisture and swollen, or the hinge screws have stripped in the fiberboard and the slab has dropped. Therma-Tru fiberglass slabs don’t warp, but the jambs do if water gets past the brickmold.
  • Visible daylight under the door or through the sweep - The sweep seal has compressed past recovery or the sill cap has worn to the aluminum carrier. On Smooth-Star units, the OEM sweep is a kerf-mounted vinyl with a fin; aftermarket sweeps without the fin don’t seal against the composite sill profile.
  • Glass fogging in a side-lite or patio door insert - The insulated glass unit seal has failed. Therma-Tru sources IGU’s by specification; replacement requires the exact glass dimensions and low-E coating match, which we verify against the original order record or measure on-site.
  • Brickmold or exterior trim pulling away from the jamb - Fastener corrosion or inadequate flashing at install. In Mountain View’s older stock, we find 8d nails and no flashing tape; current best practice is pan flashing, peel-and-stick membrane, and mechanical fastening with compatible screws.

The range depends on four things: whether the existing frame is salvageable, whether the rough opening needs structural modification, the slab series and glass specification, and the interior finish work required to blend the new door with cabinets or backsplash. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, you receive a written price before any work starts - every line item, no “call for a quote.” If you have a competitor’s estimate, we’ll review it line by line at no charge.

Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation, the flashing, and the finish. If the door doesn’t operate, seal, or drain the way we documented it should, we make it right. The warranty is printed on every page and backed by a terms page, not an asterisk.

There’s a safe middle ground, and then there’s the part that goes wrong fast.

What you can check yourself: Verify the slab stamp for series and size. Open the door 90 degrees and sight down the jamb - if it’s bowed or the reveal is uneven, the jamb is compromised, not just the sweep. Check the sill pan from outside with a flashlight; standing water or debris against the threshold indicates a drainage problem, not a door problem. These observations help us bring the right unit on the first trip.

What we don’t recommend doing yourself: Removing a load-bearing header to widen a kitchen opening, cutting a new rough opening in stucco or siding without proper flashing integration, or attempting to hang a pre-hung unit solo. The slab weighs 80-120 pounds depending on glass; the jamb must be shimmed plumb in three planes; and the sill pan must be integrated with housewrap or the next rain enters the wall cavity. We’ve been called to Mountain View jobs where a well-intentioned homeowner installed the unit level but not plumb, and the door never sealed. Measure twice, write it down, then build it that way.
