Heritage 30, Heritage 40, and Heritage 50 share a 5 5/8-inch exposure and standard three-tab layout; Elite Glass-Seal and Heritage Vintage use a laminated architectural profile with a 5 1/2-inch exposure that won’t line up if you drop a Heritage 30 shingle into the repair. The model number is printed on the underside of the shingle in faded ink, but the easier check is the bundle wrapper if you saved one, or the original permit paperwork from the City of Mountain View building department.

• Granule loss exposing the fiberglass mat. Tamko’s mineral surfacing sheds heavily in the first two years, then stabilizes; if you’re seeing bare spots after year five, the asphalt binder is oxidizing faster than expected. Mountain View’s combination of UV exposure and marine air accelerates this.
• Curling or clawing at the shingle edges. The bottom edge turns up (curling) or the center lifts while edges stay flat (clawing). • Cracked shingles in a diagonal pattern. This follows the fiberglass mat weave and usually means the shingle was installed over an uneven deck or the fastener pattern was too tight, restricting movement.
• Flashing separation at valleys or wall junctions. Tamko’s recommended closed-cut valley detail requires a specific 12-inch center cut; if the original installer shortened that, debris accumulates and lifts the edge.
• Interior stains appearing after wind events. The shingle may look intact from the street, but the self-seal strip has failed along the windward edge. Tamko’s sealant activates at 140°F; Mountain View’s mild summers sometimes delay full activation for months after installation.

The spread on full replacement comes down to three things: deck condition (we find soft plywood on about 30% of Mountain View homes over 25 years old), story height and roof pitch (steeper means more labor hours), and whether the original installation used a nail gun or hand-nailing.
