Signs Your Sterling Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

• Water seeping from the base perimeter. The Vikrell base-to-wall seal gasket hardens after 10-15 years in Mountain View’s dry climate, and the thermal cycling between cool mornings and heated showers accelerates the crack. Once the seal goes, water tracks along the subfloor rather than showing itself immediately.

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the point where you need the right tools and the right backup.

What you can check yourself: the model number location, the base dimensions, whether the door rollers are visibly cracked, and whether the wall panels move when you press them. Take photos. If water is pooling, note whether it’s near the drain or the perimeter - that distinction tells us whether we’re looking at a seal or a structural issue.

Where DIY goes wrong: Sterling’s Vikrell panels require exact shimming against the studs; too tight and they bow, too loose and they rattle and leak. The base must sit level within 1/8 inch across the entire footprint, or the door won’t track and the unit will eventually crack. We’ve been called to Mountain View homes where a homeowner’s self-install looked fine for three months, then the base settled and the door frame twisted.
