Signs Your Silestone Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

• Hairline cracks radiating from sink or cooktop cutouts. These almost always trace to inadequate support beneath the span, or from a substrate that wasn’t leveled to Silestone’s 3 mm over 3 m flatness requirement. In Mountain View’s older Eichler and ranch additions, we see this where original plywood subcabinets were reused without checking for moisture warping.
• Discoloration or whitening along seams. The color-match epoxy has degraded, usually from UV exposure on south-facing ADU walls or from thermal cycling where the addition lacks proper soffit ventilation. Silestone’s resin binder is stable to about 150°F, but dark colors in direct sun through single-pane ADU windows can exceed that surface temperature.
• Soft spots or flex when pressed. The substrate has failed, not the Silestone. Particleboard swells; marine-grade plywood doesn’t. We find this in Mountain View additions built during the 2017-2019 rush where speed trumped spec, and the contractor used standard particleboard in a humidity zone that demanded exterior-grade.
• Chipping at edges or corners. Impact damage is obvious, but less obvious is thermal shock: setting a hot pan directly on the surface creates differential expansion between the quartz and resin binder. Silestone tolerates brief contact to 150°F; sustained heat above 120°F weakens the bond over time.
• Visible seam separation or lippage. The installation adhesive has failed, or the substrate has shifted. In Mountain View’s clay-heavy soils, particularly near the Permanente Creek drainage, foundation settling in older additions can torque cabinets enough to stress seams within 18 months of installation.
